USE YOUR HEAD: THE LOW DOWN ON HAIR LOSS
ALTHOUGH HAIR LOSS AFFECTS 85% OF MEN, IT’S A SUBJECT THAT MANY OF US ARE UNCOMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT.
OUR GOAL IS TO BREAK DOWN THE STIGMA SURROUNDING HAIR LOSS AND PROVIDE MEN WITH CLEARER INFORMATION AND THE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES THAT CAN BE TAKEN.
WHY DO WE EXPERIENCE HAIR LOSS?
WHY DO WE EXPERIENCE HAIR LOSS?
Androgenetic alopecia (which is just a fancy schmancy word for male pattern baldness) is the most common cause of hair loss in men, affecting 50% of all men by age 50 and 70% in later life. A variety of genetic and environmental factors play a role in male pattern baldness but researchers have determined that dihydrotestosterone or DHT is the primary hormone responsible for hair loss in men.
Long story short, an enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. DHT acts on scalp follicle tissues by causing hair follicles to miniaturize or shrink and eventually stop growing new hairs. DHT has the opposite effect on hair follicles on the beard and body by stimulating them to grow (weird, huh?). Male pattern baldness usually begins with a receding hairline over the temples, followed by the thinning of hair at the vertex or top of the scalp.
WTF is DHT?
Dihydrotestosterone a.k.a. DHT is the primary hormone responsible for male pattern baldness. DHT is biologically important and contributes to male sex characteristics when you go through puberty. Although DHT is derived from testosterone, DHT is much more powerful. The enzyme 5 alpha-reductase converts testosterone to DHT in certain tissues
including the skin and hair follicles. Up to 10 percent of testosterone is normally converted into DHT.
DHT acts on scalp follicle tissues by causing hair follicles to miniaturize or shrink and eventually stop growing new hairs. DHT has the opposite effect on hair follicles on the beard and body, by stimulating these follicle types to grow.
WHAT IS 5 ALPHA-REDUCTASE?
We wont bore you with the details but simply put, 5 alpha-reductase (5-AR, 5α-reductase) is the enzyme that helps convert testosterone to DHT.
HOW DO I PREVENT HAIR LOSS?
All treatments for male pattern baldness, whether prescribed medications or natural treatments, either target DHT to prevent hair loss and/or stimulate growth of your existing hair follicles.
Targeting DHT: Since DHT is the primary hormone responsible for hair loss in men, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine that the best way to prevent hair loss is by targeting or blocking DHT. “DHT blockers” block the action of 5 alpha-reductase enzyme from converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, thereby reducing DHT levels.
Promote hair growth: Ingredients that facilitate the flow of blood to hair follicles and scalp deliver more oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles, promoting hair growth. These ingredients increase the growth phase cycle, shorten the resting phase, and increase the blood flow to the hair follicle. These ingredients have no effect on the hormonal process of hair loss. Additionally, to maintain existing hair mass, it is important to treat with ingredients that strengthen and protect existing hair follicles and mass.
The bottom line is that the earlier you start to block DHT and introduce ingredients that promote hair growth, the more successful you’ll be in preventing further hair loss.
HAIR LOSS MYTHS
MYTH 1: WEARING HATS CAN CAUSE HAIR TO FALL OUT
FALSE. We can still hear our mom telling us that if we kept wearing hats, our hair was going to fall out. While mom may have been using scare tactics to reduce our hat wearing, science tells us otherwise.
There is an incorrect assumption that our scalp needs to “breathe” but oxygen is supplied to the hair follicles through the bloodstream. So, wear a hat all you want – this will not speed up your hair loss or affect your hair in any way.
MYTH 2: ONLY MEN OVER 50 START GOING BALD
FALSE. Hair loss due to male pattern baldness often starts mid-twenties for men with 30% experiencing hair loss by age 30. That’s why it is important to take preventative actions. The earlier and more proactive you are in introducing science backed ingredients that prevent hair loss and promote hair growth in your daily regime, the more successful you’ll be in preventing further hair loss (if that’s not a sales pitch, I don’t know what is).
MYTH 3: GENETIC HAIR LOSS IS PASSED DOWN THROUGH YOUR MOTHER’S SIDE OF THE FAMILY
FALSE. It’s an age old lie we have told ourselves for years - “my mother’s father and grandfather had full heads of hair, so I wont lose my hair”. Not true. Hereditary hair loss can be passed on by either parent. Yes, genetics can be blamed, but don’t blame your sweet mother alone!
MYTH 4: BALD MEN HAVE MORE TESTOSTERONE
FALSE. It’s a vicious lie bald men have been spreading for decades. While it may be comforting to some bald men to think that they have higher testosterone levels than their full headed friends – it just ain’t true. Studies have shown that men who go bald and those who don’t, have the same levels of testosterone.
Also, testosterone doesn’t cause hair loss. As explained in HAIR LOSS 101, dihydrotestosterone a.k.a. DHT is the primary hormone responsible for male pattern baldness. We can see how this could be confusing as DHT is derived from testosterone (the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone to DHT in certain tissues including the skin and hair follicles). Elevated levels of DHT and your sensitivity towards DHT causes scalp hair follicles to miniaturize or shrink and eventually stop growing new hairs.
MYTH 5: SHAMPOOING YOUR HAIR TOO MUCH CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS
FALSE. How often you shampoo your hair has no effect on overall loss or growth of hair. You may notice your hair is falling out more while you wash it, but losing 50-100 hairs a day is normal. So, don’t be gross, shower and shampoo your hair often.
MYTH 6: VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS CAN HELP PROMOTE HAIR GROWTH
Kinda. Biotin (vitamin B7), Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and Zinc, among others, are all linked to healthy hair growth; however, taking supplements will only help if your diet is deficient in these vitamins/micronutrients.
Biotin (vitamin B7) is a vitamin found in foods like eggs, milk, and bananas and can increase keratin, a protein found in your hair, nails, and skin. A deficiency in Biotin can cause thinning of the hair, a rash on the face and brittle nails.
All cells need vitamin A for growth. This includes hair, the fastest growing tissue in the human body. Sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkins, spinach, and kale are all rich in beta-carotene, which is turned into vitamin A.
Vitamin D’s actual role in hair growth is not understood, but one form of hair loss is linked to deficiencies. You can increase vitamin D levels through sun exposure or by eating certain foods such as oily fish - salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel, red meat, liver, egg yolks and fortified foods, including, some fat spreads and breakfast cereals.
Zinc plays an important role in hair tissue growth and repair. It also helps keep the oil glands around the follicles working properly. Hair loss is a common symptom of zinc deficiency and studies show resolving zinc deficiency with supplementation may reduce deficiency-related hair loss. Foods high in zinc include oysters, beef, spinach, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, and lentils.
WTF ARE SULFATES, PARABENS, AND PHTHALATES?
SULFATES
Sulfates are detergents, or surfactants, commonly found in products like shampoo. Sulphates are an efficient cleanser they strip away moisture, leaving the hair dry and unhealthy. Sulfates can dry your scalp and cause skin irritation resulting in an acceleration of hair loss but it is not generally thought that sulfates are dangerous to your health.
PARABENS
Parabens are a powerful preservative and are normally added to extend the life of hair products and prevent the build-up of mold, fungus and bacteria. Parabens can cause hair loss because they are easily absorbed through your skin – drying and irritating your scalp. Studies have shown that parabens may increase the estrogen hormone (female hormone) and they may contribute to the risk of cancer, particularly breast cancer in women. Parabens are banned in the European Union. All in all - they ain’t something you want on your head or skin.
PHTHALATES
Phthalates are one of the most commonly used chemicals in the world and are found in everyday
products, including hair products. Phthalates are used as gelling agents in some hair products and they help lubricate and soften substances. Phthalates can be potentially toxic in high concentrations and in animal testing, some phthalates caused malformations and permanent damage of the male reproductive system. So protect your junk and make sure you are using phthalate free products.
